Getting A Medical Marijuana Card

A Medical Marijuana Card, for the purposes of this blog, refers to any form of license that is issued by a Medical Marijuana State which requires a Medical Marijuana patient to register themselves as such.

Most, but not all, Medical Marijuana State's require that a patient who has been evaluated by a licensed Medical Marijuana Doctor and found to be a candidate for Medical Marijuana treatment, register with the state. In these states you are normally issued a temporary license by your doctor until your permanent license is received from the state.

Although some do not, most state's charge a fee for registering for a Medical Marijuana Card and the amounts vary widely from state to state. Fees currently range from $10.00 up to $200.00 and over. You should contact your State or local Medical Marijuana Doctor to inquire as to the exact payment required to obtain your license.

Some states have lower fees for patients who qualify for various government assistance programs. Be sure to ask if you are eligible for a reduced rate.

The Medical Marijuana Card is your proof that you are legal to obtain, posses, grow [not allowed in all Medical Marijuana States, Click for more] and use Medical Marijuana for treatment of your condition. You will be required to produce this card when purchasing Medical Marijuana in any form, or when questioned by law enforcement officers.  Some Medical Marijuana States give Medical Marijuana Patients some protection from employment discrimination based on your use of your legal prescription. In those states you may also need to show your Medical Marijuana Card to employers or prospective employers to verify your legal status.

In most cases your photo and other personal information will be printed on your card, similar to a drivers license. Make sure to keep it with you at all times and treat it the same as any important documentation.

Do not delay in submitting your paperwork once your Doctor has approved you for Medical Marijuana treatment. The temporary license is only good for a short time and the state will not accept an expired request. You would then have to pay another fee to the Doctor for an updated evaluation. This can delay your effective treatment and get very costly to you since no insurance is accepted and fees are due up front.

The following is a list of Medical Marijuana State licensing fees and may not be totally inclusive. These fees are for the state to enter you into their registry and issue the Medical Marijuana Card to you, and do not include the Doctors evaluation or any subsequent charges or fees your state or Doctor may impose. States may change their fees for licensing at any time so there are no guarantees that the listed amounts are current. Please contact your State or Doctor for the correct amount.
